There was going to be a meeting, that much was obvious. Many people in City Hall hardly bothered minding their tongue when only the guards could hear them. Apparently a lot of people were invited. Folks had come all the way from the camp, the head of Ebony Prison was here and all other kinds of people from middle to high positions. This meant two things. One, security was beefed up like crazy. Niodin didn’t know half the guys in uniform, while he usually knew pretty much everyone he worked with. They really went all out. And two, they, the guards, would have a lot more to do than just guard duty. It basically came down to ‘to regular officers, you guys are guards. To generals, directors and company owners, you’re whatever they need you to be. Everyone has to be in a good mood’. Three people had already asked Niodin for directions (which really just meant showing them the way) and a few had asked him to go fetch something for him. He hated things like this. To his very core. But he remained polite, he kept smiling. And wherever he could, he did as he was told. He could only refuse if it meant not enough guards would be left in the room he was stationed in, but sadly that had not been the case at any point so far. His face did not betray anything, as far as he knew. But he was still on edge. So many important people, so much that could go wrong. He couldn’t wait for this day to finally be over. But it was only somewhere around four in the afternoon, and it wouldn’t be over until somewhere around eight. He was currently in his main position; left of the door that lead to the meeting room all this would be held in in about roughly an hour. Once everything started, he was tasked with standing guard inside. That was something he did look forward to. Dangerous as it was, it was the perfect opportunity to gain the sort of intel he had dreamt of when he was assigned this task.

It was that time of the year again. He had resented this moment since he first saw the official invitation lying on his desk, and that sentiment had only grown as the time before the event grew shorter. The yearly meeting of officers, generals and everyone else that was important within the government would be held in City Hall, which meant Raiden had had to travel all the way from the labor camp, through the wastelands and into Rosehall. Sure, a special vehicle was arranged to pick him up, but that didn't mean the journey any less tedious. It just made it safer. One needed only one single look at his eyes to see that the head guard of the camp was in a very bad mood that day. His face stood grim and if eyes could spell out words, Raidens eyes would spell out "murder" or maybe "you're dead". The prospect of the meeting, that without doubt would be longer than planned, did nothing to lighten his mood. Raiden felt uncomfortable here, in these spotless halls where power was not demonstrated through action but rather through words and underhand games. Nevertheless, his faithful sword hung at his side, even though he knew using it would not be tolerated. His eyes quickly took in the rather large hall in front of the meeting room. People where slowly dribbling inside, with only an hour to go before the meeting would start. The marble floor glistered in the light the chandeliers shone down, competed only by sunlight that entered the hall in long streaks through the stained glass windows. Tapestries hung down from the high ceiling, depicting various bits of nature from times long gone. Everything, from the door handles to the arched ceiling, was decorated with patterns of roses and thorns, no doubt symbolizing the city of Rosehall itself. Some of the faces around here he knew, remembered them from the last meeting or from the camp. Most he didn't. He did recognize the uniforms though. Guards and officers were easy to spot, government officials a bit less easy but it was still doable, and the rest... The rest was an unorganized mess of colors and different styles. It was as if every single person had gone all out and had dressed in the most fancy thing they could find. Raiden himself just preferred his normal clothing. Dark, wide pants, matching shoes, and a black yukata that he closed with his weapon belt. Just over his heart he had pinned the small golden emblem that depicted his rank, and that was about it. No big and fancy details for him, he wanted to be able to move about freely and without having to think about accessories. Which made him stand out here. Raiden sighed and wished he was back home at the camp. Dealing with freaks was easier than dealing with this formal shit. He also saw people holding drinks, and seeing that made his mouth water. That had to be high quality stuff, something they didn't have in the camp. Raiden looked around some more, and spotted a guard that wasn't really doing anything or so it seemed. That was his cue to walk up to the guy. "Go fetch me what they are having," he commanded, gesturing in the general direction of some of the people with drinks.

Several more people had entered the hall, but one in particular stood out. Because he looked ridiculous. Niodin was no fashionista. Nor did he care much for fashion. But he was down to earth enough to feel the urge to shake his head at some of the things that were worn here. What was that thing, a kimono? His attention soon shifted away again, however, as he was constantly keeping an eye on what was going on in the room. He didn't exactly guard these people with a passion, but it was worth it. And besides, there was often no telling who of the unfamiliar faces was really a government official and who was allied to the resistance. It wasn't much later when the kimono-lad approached Niodin. "Go fetch me what they are having," he said, his tone commanding and Niodin had to bite back his annoyance. Most of the men and women here had at least been close to polite. Dismissive, sure, but this was the first time someone actually literally told him to go fetch something. He quickly judged the man and doubted he could be very high in rank, as he did not recognize him. "I'm a guard, sir, not a servant," he answered calmly. His voice was polite, but there was absolutely a cool undertone to it. He gestured towards the bar, which was obscured by people. "But you can get drinks over there, at the bar. It's right on the other side of the room." His dark eyes betrayed little, but he was tensed up. He did everything within his power to just keep calm and friendly, but this event was an incredible challenge for him. It wasn't only his hatred for these people and the work they did. It wasn't only that he was just a number. It was also the way they really seemed to consider him and his colleagues more tools than anything else. It was degrading and humiliating, but he had no choice but to keep his face neutral and speak as politely as he could muster.

If there was one thing Raiden wasn't used to, it was guards not immediately doing as he asked. Or commanded. Because Raiden did not ask. Never. But this man... "I'm a guard, sir, not a servant," the answer had been. It was something that made Raiden frown. "But you can get drinks over there, at the bar. It's right on the other side of the room." Although he understood why this guard did not move from his position, he did not get why this guard thought defiling a direct order from his superior was a good idea. Back in the camp, someone would be punished for this kind of behavior. He took a step closer, until he stood just inside the comfort zone of the guard. "The emblem above my heart, do you know what that means?" he asked, talking in an almost mocking tone. His hand almost automatically shifted to a position a bit closer to his sword, while his eyes almost drilled themselves into the guard's eyes. Intimidation usually worked, especially when he was taller than the other person.

The man came closer, too close to Niodin's liking, but the young infiltrant refused to step back. Not that he really could, as he was already practically with his back against the wall, but it was the thought that mattered. The words of the man, as well as the emblem he pointed at made Niodin's blood freeze. How could he have missed that. How the fuck could he not have noticed that goddamn thing. He felt the blood drain from his face as he realized who it had to be he was dealing with. He swallowed and tried to keep his composure. Just stay calm. Kiss his boots if you have to, but stay calm, he mentally told himself. He cast down his eyes, figuring the only thing that could help him now was pretending to be respectful and submissive. It was all fake, but the stress sure as hell wasn't. If this went South he was fucked. He had heard of the Guard Leader of the camp, of the things that man was allegedly capable of. And he definitely did not wish to be on the receiving end of that. "My sincere apologies sir," he forced himself to say, looking back up again. "My mistake. If you would be so kind as to follow me, I'll show you to the bar," he added, hoping it was polite enough. He quickly studied the man. There was no warmth to be detected with him. No empathy. Niodin went ahead, moving through the crowd, towards the bar. He didn't feel too happy about having his unprotected back turned towards that man, as his instincts tried to tell him to get the fuck away from him, but what choice did he have? There were a few people sitting at the bar, but it probably wouldn't be until after the meeting that the real 'fun' would begin there.

The guards face quickly drained of color as he looked at the emblem. He must have realized the big mistake he had made. Pff. Pathetic. Raiden couldn't help but slightly lift the corners of his mouth into a grin that meant nothing but trouble. He wasn't someone to give people second chances, but here, in the middle of this group of important and influential people, he decided to just wait and see where this would go. After all, he could always request this guard be transferred to the camp. And in there, no one would be able to refrain him from doing whatever he wanted. "My sincere apologies sir, my mistake. If you would be so kind as to follow me, I'll show you to the bar," the guard said, no doubt in an attempt to save his ass. The beginning was alright, but then he made a second mistake. And that ticked Raiden off. The fact that he had missed the emblem, alright, he could understand that. The thing was rather small, after all. But the actions of the guard, they just showed he wasn't listening well enough. So when the man started walking towards the bar, Raiden stood still where he was, following him with his eyes. "That was not what I asked you to do, guard." His voice was raised enough for at least part of the room to hear him, and the amount of disdain he put into the last word made a few people look at the guard in pity. Raiden had quite the reputation, and the people who knew him, knew that guard would be made aware of that in a very unpleasant way.

He already realized something was off when the man didn't come with him, and only then he realized that he had been asked to fetch the drink, not lead him to the drink. He almost swore. Almost. This never happened normally. Why was he blundering like this? Keep it together, Niodin, keep it together. "That was not what I asked you to do, guard." The disdain in his voice made Niodin's blood boil, despite the nervousness. He forced himself to turn around however, and apologize again. "You're right, sir, my apologies. One drink coming up," he managed to say, still keeping his face straight. As he was walking towards the bar however, his cheeks certainly felt warmer. He had expected this event to not be fun, but to be humiliated like this? No, he had not seen that coming. He ordered the drink. It had gone oddly quiet in the room now that everyone was paying attention. The bartender handed him the glass and when Niodin took it, the man briefly grabbed his wrist. "Don't let 'm get to ya, lad, you can do this," he said in thick accent Niodin could not quite place. The man smiled. Niodin did not smile, but his face did soften for a moment and he nodded briefly, after which he walked back to the Asian man. Truth was, his heart was racing. There were countless ways this guy could fuck him over if he wanted to. Hell, he could even just wait for Niodin after all this was over, put a bullet in his head, claim self-defense and get away scot-free if he wanted to. So for what it's worth, Niodin did his utmost best to just come across as a nobody who happened to have made a few fuck-ups. His best hope was that he wasn't deemed important enough to be made an example of. "Your drink, sir," he said, handing Raiden the glass. The stuff in it was the kind of booze a man like Niodin would likely never even get to taste. Ridiculously expensive and apparently tasty; Niodin had no idea. "Do you need anything else?" He did not feel like spending a single second longer than absolutely necessary with this man, but this was damage control. This was playing his part and hoping it would not be a disaster. Once all this is over I'll just make a dartboard with his face on it. But for now, focus.

He didn't say anything and just looked at the guard, wondering how much his commanding officer would struggle to keep the guy if Raiden requested transferal. It was surely tempting, even if it was only to learn this guard how to follow order to the dot. The learning curve for that somehow became amazing in his presence, he had found out. He'd need to think about this some more, probably, so for now the man just observed the guard. Raiden looked at how he walked, how he kept his shoulders, his head. He looked for weakness. However, there was none he could see, aside from the unprotected back. To be honest, if the guard had annoyed him even more than he already had, there probably would be a sword sticking out of there already, despite what room they were in, despite the audience. Raiden just didn't care about that. What were they going to do, stop him? Most people here knew better. Then again, doing something like that with so many witnesses would surely lead to a demotion and he didn't really want to give up his position just yet. The guard captain still had things to do, freaks to torture. A little bit later the guard returned with the drink. At least the guy knew how to address people who were higher in rank than him, that was something. Raiden accepted the drink and took a small sip. This stuff was way better than whatever they could get in the camp, where simple beers were the standard. This was very tasty. It made the corners of his mouth lift up ever so slightly, almost back to a neutral flat line. "Do you need anything else?" the guard asked, and Raiden decided that he did, sadly enough, not know how to address a superior. He almost let out a sigh and moved his attention from his drink to the guard. "Your name, and that of you commanding officer," was all he answered, looking him straight into the eye. He was still doubting if he should ask for a transferal or not, mainly because there were already a lot of guards at the camp, almost too many to keep an eye on. Still, if he asked the name now he could always request it if wanted.

“Your name, and that of your commanding officer." Niodin’s pride wanted him to hold the other man’s stare and refuse to show any fear, despite the blood having probably drained from his face, but his rational side was well aware of how provocative that could seem, so while trying to ignore both the feeling of humiliation as well as the growing fear that he was in deep shit, he cast his eyes down, hoping to come across as just some spineless joe, not worth the attention. “Niodin Evans,” he said. “Sir,” he added, his teeth slightly clenched. That was something he wasn’t able to hold back. Despite what was at stake, he hated this man with the fire of a thousand suns and that was hard to bite back, even with the training he had behind him. “My superior’s Godfrey Whitner, sir." He exhaled slowly. He didn’t like the idea of this guy having this information, but lying would probably turn out worse for him. Focus. One slip-up’s all it takes. The room was still awfully quiet, aside from some mumbling here and there. Everyone was witnessing what was going down here. Niodin was willing to bet this guy enjoyed the audience but he himself felt like absolute shit. “Anything else, sir?” he said, looking up. Please just fuck off, he thought.

It took a moment before he received an answer. Niodin Evans... Commanding officer: Godfrey Whitner... Raiden let the names go around his mind for a bit, trying to remember whether he had heard of them before. The former he hadn't, obviously, the latter, however... That name he knew. It was not a friend of his, but also not an enemy. To be completely honest, he barely knew the guy. On the other hand, that was more or less because of being in the camp most of the time. The guard captain looked at the guard in front of him in a calculating manner. For now, he would not do anything to the man. The moment one of the camp guards got incapacitated or otherwise unable to resume their duty, however, he would request the transferal. "Anything else, sir?" the guard asked, suddenly having refound the correct way to speak to superiors. That was progress. "That will be all. For now. I will be watching you, mister... Evans. Dismissed." Raiden all but spit out the name, the added "mister" not even meant politely. With that, he turned and went to find another place to stand, somewhere with a clear line of sight on this specific guard.

"That will be all. For now. I will be watching you, mister… Evans." For a brief moment Niodin’s expression spelled out nothing but hostility, but he regained himself. “Dismissed." “Yes, sir,” he said. The other turned and Niodin watched him walk away, his eyes having burnt a hole in the man’s back had that been possible. Then he focussed again. He had already let himself go, even though no one had seemed to notice. But there was only so much anger one man could possibly hold in. Don’t forget your purpose, he reminded himself. You’re here for something a lot more important than just him. Realizing the scale of the game he played in calmed him down. His ego wasn’t what was important here. Now that the situation had died down, most people’s attention shifted to something else. A few were still studying either Niodin or Raiden, but the young guard pretended not to notice while his eyes sharply scanned the crowd, as was his task. Loud noises outside city hall startled him, however, along with pretty much everyone in the room. There was gunfire, loud voices. A few people screamed. In a flash Niodin had his weapon ready. “Everybody, stay calm!” he roared over the group of slowly panicking individuals. A lot of eyes were on him now. Several other guards were also addressing the people near them. Niodin recognized one of his superiors, who ordered the people to follow him into the meeting room, as it was the closest thing to a bunker you’d find above ground. As they passed Niodin, the man briefly looked at him. “Keep guarding that door, boy, whatever happens, whatever’s going on, you will not let anyone in who doesn’t belong here, understood?" “Yes sir." Niodin couldn’t see from where he was standing what was happening precisely, all he knew was that suddenly, somehow, city hall was under attack. What if they came in? If they were resistance, he’d have to fight off his own people.

His eyes went over the crowd a few times, assessing who was there and who would try to steer negotiations in which direction. There had been a small summary of the main points of this meeting with the invitation he had gotten, so those that wanted to spark up discussions had had all the time to prepare. He didn't like that. He knew though that they did reserve some time for talking about the policies about freaks and rebels, so at least that was kinda nice. If only he could skip the rest, though. Raiden was still musing over the meeting to come when there where suddenly gunshots somewhere outside. And loud screams. And more noise. The Asian man let out a sigh. Of course. This meetup traditionally wasn't complete without someone trying to stop it. Violently. This, however, was ahead of schedule and was possibly more organised than usual. Without him noticing his hand had already gone to his blade, ready to pull it out whenever. He wouldn't have to, if the guards here did what they were supposed to do, but he wasn't entirely convinced of their competence just yet. It did seem like they were handling things though, prompting people to go into the extra secure meeting room. Logical choice, so Raiden did as was asked. At a slow, calm pace he started walking towards the doorway, keeping a little bit of distance between the people in front of him and himself. The shouting and sounds of fighting had in the meanwhile grown closer to the entrance of the room. Raiden could almost distinguish the specific sounds of bodies dropping to the floor, be it quite muffled. It made him stop dead in his tracks, then turn around with drawn weapon. Maybe, just maybe, he kinda wanted to skewer some freaks that day. And if it were indeed freaks out there, if they were defeating the guards, they just gave him a good reason to do so. A small grin appeared on his face, some bloodthirst appeared in his eyes. This would be fun.

Most of the people obediently followed into the meeting room. Niodin was still tense, however. If they weren’t quick enough this could end in an absolute bloodbath and while he loathed these people, he didn’t want that to happen either. It went smoothly, although the sounds of fighting came closer quickly. He noticed the man from earlier, Kimura, stopping and his eyes narrowed. Kimura certainly wasn’t the type to turn against the government, so that left only one option open; he was going to fight as well. Niodin gritted his teeth. He didn’t doubt for a second that the man knew what he did, but just seeing that sword being unsheathed made him feel sick. He’d heard what the guy was capable of and had no idea what to expect here. However, at the same time he wondered why the man drew a sword in what could become an all out gunfight Definitely not turning my back towards him, in any case, Niodin thought to himself. His gun was ready to fire, his back against the wall. At least they wouldn’t be able to say he didn’t stay on his post if he got turned into a human Swiss cheese. Despite the amount of guards present, a few of the attackers had managed to get in. There weren’t many left, but they opened fire right away, and Niodin did the same. He did not have to shoot too many bullets, however. Most of the other guards prevented the intruders from getting so close to the door to the meeting room that Niodin had to end them, and quite a few times pulling the trigger would’ve meant potentially taking down a colleague. There was a chance that among the dead attackers were people he knew, maybe even people he sympathized with, but right now it was only partially about his duty; they would not hesitate to shoot him, so he had to reciprocate that. Or at least so he thought; one woman stopped suddenly, locking eyes with him, lowering her weapon a little. She was about to say something, but another guard’s bullet took her down. Niodin pretended he hadn’t noticed and scanned the room. The chaos had mostly subsided. Several of the intruders had been taken down but not killed. They’d been better off dead. Niodin felt both relieved and guilty. Among the guards there seemed to be very few fatal injuries.
