Bright lights. Strobe lights. Dancing bodies. A beat that filled your whole body. Alcohol flowing richly. People flirting. An average night for Bryce Logan. Normally he was behind the bar here, but this was his free night, so now he was in the crowd on the dancefloor, letting go one hundred procent. For him the night had just started and he was mostly just really tipsy. But the night was young. He had hours to go until the sun would rise again. A brunette danced close to him for a while and he grinned. Going out in locations like this made him feel good, wanted. He made his way back to the bar and ordered another drink. His shirt stuck to his body. It was hot in here and he was sweating like a sinner in church due to his time on the dance floor. If you looked around in this club you wouldn't think it was only a couple of decades after the world had been at an all-time low. But these people didn't care. They were stuck in this city, so why not party? So why not go wild until your legs would give out? What else was there to choose from except conformity?
After a while Bryce got tired, and he walked outside with his drink to allow himself one quick smoke. Once he had taken the last sip of his drink, he carelessly tossed the plastic cup aside. Someone else was going to clean that up, probably. He lit one up and leant against the wall. Outside you could still clearly hear the music and feel the bass. But all in a bit more of a subdued way. Almost surreal. The fresh air was pleasant for Bryce, who was definitely a bit fuzzy in the head at this point. But in a good way. He peacefully smoked his cigarette, greeting a few people that walked in and out of the club. Once it was nearly gone he threw it onto the ground and rubbed it into the ground with his shoe. He was about to head inside when he heard commotion down the street. Agitated voices, shouting. It was oddly sobering and he started walking, about to check out just what the hell was going on out there.

If someone would ask Iah (they never did, but he always shared his thoughts anyway), he'd say that there were only two reasons why people went out to clubs. He had heard a lot of excuses, but it always came down to this: people either wanted to get drunk, to get laid, or both. Iah wasn't one to make it sound any prettier than it was. Hell, right now he was definitely trying to get both. Currently, however, he was failing horribly. There was a bottle of beer in his hand, but it was empty, and worst of all, he was standing outside the club. Outside. Not inside, like he wanted. "Come on, man, I'm not looking for any trouble," he tried, not for the first time. "Just let me in." Jerry, the bouncer, didn't seem very amused. "You went looking for trouble the last time you came here- and the four times before that," he pointed out. Iah pouted and put down his empty bottle, stumbling over his own feet. Okay, so maybe he was a little drunk. Tipsy, at the least. "The last time definitely wasn't my fault," he protested. "I can't smell homophobe, y'know, I just winked at the guy. How was I to know he'd punch me in the face?" Jerry didn't move. Probably because the other four times had been partly Iah's fault. He'd take 50% of the responsibility. Maybe 75%, figuring he had been the one to throw the first punch, not regarding the fact that he had also horribly missed. "There's a gay bar, you know," Jerry told him, his arms folded in front of his chest. He was everything you'd expect a bouncer to be: bulky, tall, and very, very boring. "I know," Iah grumbled. "One. Am I supposed to stick to just one bar, all because some straight guys can't deal with the fact that I take it up the-" "Okay, I think it's really time for you to leave now, Iah," Jerry interrupted him. When he made to grab for Iah's shoulder, he jumped backwards. "Just one drink!" He tried. "One drink and then I'm gone," he promised, and winked. "You could even buy it for me," he added. Jerry pulled up an eyebrow, not very impressed by Iah's terrible attempt at flirting his way in. "I'm straight," he noted. "Yes, well, I've heard that one before," Iah replied with a wide grin. That turned out to be the wrong thing to say, because at that point Jerry stepped forward, grabbed Iah by the waist, and threw him over the shoulder. "I don't see how else I'm supposed to get rid of you," Jerry said, having to raise his voice as Iah started shouting his extensive swear word vocabulary.

Bryce had been mentally prepared for a myriad of things. A young man being carried off by Jerry, the bouncer, was not one of those things. Bryce blinked for a moment, but then couldn't help but laugh. It looked ridiculous. The slender guy, shouting at the top of his lungs, being carried off by Jerry, who could probably lift a baby elephant if he had to, and who seemed more annoyed than otherwise impressed. Bryce looked on, until Jerry had crossed the street with the guy and put him down on the other side of it, shaking his head and mumbling as he walked back to the entrance of the club. Bryce walked over to the troublemaker, curious as to what was going on. "The fuck was that, man?" he asked with a big grin, still more or less processing what had just happened. He was secretly rather glad that he himself was both tall and rather muscular; he wasn't scooped up quite as easily. And Jesus, that shit just had to be humiliating as fuck. There weren't all that many smokers outside at this point, but definitely enough to make sure the entire club would be updated in the next fifteen minutes. Bryce faintly recognized the guy, but it wasn't enough for his tipsy brain to make any connections; Bryce met countless people when going out. Even when he was sober you had to do some pretty crazy things to be remembered. This incident, however, certainly was crazy enough.

As soon as Jerry put him down, Iah brushed a hand through his hair to fix it and grumbled. "That's really not the way to treat a friend, Jer," he complained, but by the time Iah had reached the end of his sentence, Jerry was already walking back to the club. Fine. It wasn't like Iah had an unhealthy obsession with getting the last word. Definitely not. "You should try not being fucking rude, I hear it's great for preventing wrinkles!" He yelled. Okay, so maybe he did have such an obsession, whatever. Just then, a guy came walking towards him. "The fuck was that, man?" he asked, and the grin on his face helped temper Iah's annoyance a little bit. "That was my ego being crushed into the ground," Iah replied with a grave face. "I also think I insulted his heterosexuality," he added. "Apparently bouncers aren't very keen on flirting." He eyed the few smokers huddling around the entrance of the club, and saw that they were definitely also eyeing him. Great. It seemed his ego would have to take another hit. His fingers itched for a cigarette, so he stuffed them into the pockets of his trousers, reminding himself he quit months ago. He looked back to the guy in front of him, and frowned at the spark of recognition. "Wait, aren't you a bartender?" He asked, and grinned. "Do you get like, discounts or free drinks? Because if that's the case, you should definitely ask me if I want one," he hinted. Well, it wasn't really subtle enough to be called a hint, but he had tried. "I'll say yes, promise," he added with a wink.

"That was my ego being crushed into the ground," the guy replied and Bryce chuckled. Well, yeah, he could get behind that. "I also think I insulted his heterosexuality," the other went on and Bryce's eyebrows went up a little. Oh, so he was one of them fruity types, then? Well, as long as he wasn't going to try to hit on Bryce, the latter would be cool with it. The guy now frowned and Bryce looked at him with mild anticipation. Well? "Wait, aren't you a bartender?" Bryce nodded. "Yeah. Tonight's my free night," he answered. "Do you get like, discounts or free drinks? Because if that's the case, you should definitely ask me if I want one," was the response and he started laughing. "I'll say yes, promise." "Sorry mate," he said with a shrug. "I don't get free drinks and even if I did, I'd save those for girls. I ain't into guys." He wasn't entirely sure wether it had been an attempt at flirting from the guy, but he did feel obligated to make it clear he was very much not into that sort of thing. He shoved his hands in his pockets. He was only wearing a shirt and with the high temperatures inside, it was a wee bit cold outside, now that his body temperature was dropping again. The shirt showed off his tattoos, which he liked, but bringing along a jacket would probably have been a sensible move.

"Yeah. Tonight's my free night," he answered, and Iah's grin widened at that, though it immediately fell again when the guy continued. "Sorry mate, I don't get free drinks and even if I did, I'd save those for girls. I ain't into guys." Iah let out a long sigh at that. "No offense, dude, but why are all the bartenders straight? It's making it really hard for me to score free drinks and I'm broke as hell," he complained. "Also, you should definitely take that up with your boss. What's the point of being a bartender if you don't get discounts on the booze? I bet you can get your boss to warm up to the idea with a face like that." He frowned a little as he heard his own words. "Uh, I mean, with such a manly face. I mean, bro face. With your dude face," he said, trying to correct his own flirting, but horribly failing. "Also, you could still offer me a drink, because I'm a poor dude who just got literally carried away from a club on someone's shoulder and it might leave a mental scar if someone doesn't do something nice for me soon," he added. "You've probably never experienced such a thing before, since you're-," he made a vague gesture to all of Bryce's body, not sure how to describe his muscles without accidentally flirting again, "- but it was pretty horrible."

"No offense, dude, but why are all the bartenders straight? It's making it really hard for me to score free drinks and I'm broke as hell,” the other guy complained. Bryce chuckled. “Life’s unfair, buddy, life’s unfair,” he said, as he was lighting another cigarette. Now that he was standing outside so much longer than he had planned, he might as well. "Also, you should definitely take that up with your boss. What's the point of being a bartender if you don't get discounts on the booze? I bet you can get your boss to warm up to the idea with a face like that." Still lighting the cigarette, Bryce’ eyes went up and he raised his eyebrows a little as if to say ‘dude…’. The young man seemed to realize what he had just said, as he quickly tried to make it sound less gay. After which he, again, tried to convince Bryce to get him a drink, assuring him that it was the least that could be done to forget the horrible thing which had just happened. Bryce had now lit his cigarette and exhaled some smoke. He leant against a streetlight and shook his head. “You’re one persistent motherfucker, ain’t ya?” he said. “Don’t be a pussy, you’ll be fine,” he added with a grin. He realized that despite the guy knowing he was a bartender, he still wasn’t sure just who he was talking to. So he just extended his hand. “Bryce, by the way,” he said.

"Life's unfair, buddy, life's unfair," the guy said in response to Iah's complaint. Iah let out a sound that lay somewhere between a sigh and a groan. "Truer words have never been said," he muttered. "Except for that time I got told that I should definitely put on my underwear before my trousers," he added. "Those were pretty accurate as well." He watched with a hint of jealousy as the guy lit up a cigarette, and tried to remind himself of people choking to death. It didn't really work. He followed the trail of smoke that left the guy's lips, trying to come up with that long scientific name for lung cancer. Lung car-something. He still hadn't asked him for a cigarette, so in a sense it was working after all, he figured. "You're one persistent motherfucker, ain't ya?" The guy said, and Iah grinned. "How else do y'think I already managed to get six beers tonight?" He pointed out. That wasn't completely true, because though he'd had five beers tonight, he did buy some of them himself. "Don't be a pussy, you'll be fine," the guy added, and Iah folded his arms in front of his chest. "I am fine, but I'd be even better with a drink in my hand," he said, and looked down at the hand that was suddenly extended to him in surprise. "Bryce, by the way," the guy- Bryce apparently, said. Iah grinned and took his hand in his, giving it a firm shake before letting go again. "Fuck yeah, you're right, we didn't even introduce. Iah." He put his hands back into his pockets, slowly starting to notice that it wasn't very warm outside. "Okay, if I really have to I can get my own drink, but d'you mind going inside somewhere? Because it's pretty fucking cold," he said. What he didn't say out loud was that it would probably also make the bouncers a lot more friendly towards him if he wasn't going in alone, bonus points if the guy with him was a bartender.

"I am fine, but I'd be even better with a drink in my hand," the guy said, which made Bryce laugh. He then, however, shook Bryce's extended hand and introduced himself as Iah, a name that did vaguely ring a bell. "Okay, if I really have to I can get my own drink, but d'you mind going inside somewhere? Because it's pretty fucking cold," Iah then said. Bryce smiled faintly. "That's more like it. Sure," he said. "C'mon then." He went ahead, back to the club. Jerry cocked his head to one side as if to ask 'really?'. Bryce grinned guiltily. "You know me, always picking up the strays," he joked. "I thought that only went for women," Jerry shot back, now with a grin as well, looking from one to the other. "You gotta help a bro out sometimes," Bryce said. "Don't worry, I still swing only one way." Jerry reluctantly let the two of them through and Bryce turned around. "Don't go starting shit, I don't want to lose my job over some fruity motherfucker, okay?" he said, though his tone was relaxed. Even if this guy made a scene like the one Bryce had witnessed earlier, Bryce doubted he'd get fired over it. Crazier shit happened in this club every now and again, and on top of that he was surprisingly good at his job for someone who avidly disliked anything resembling hard work. Customers liked him, his physique allowed him to deal with altercations without the bouncers having to get involved, and if he had to, he could even step in for one every now and again - though he was a little bit too good-natured to be a bouncer and often let people in that he deemed alright, when they turned out to be a bit out of wack.

Iah was glad Bryce seemed to be amused by his persistence, because a lot of people would've become annoyed. In fact, it wouldn't've been the first time if Bryce had decided to just turn around and leave. "That's more like it. Sure," Bryce said when Iah proposed to go inside. When he walked back towards the club, Iah followed with a slight jump in his step. Jerry seemed to be slightly annoyed, but didn't do anything to stop him. "You know me, always picking up strays," Bryce joked, and Iah pretended to be insulted. "Strays don't put this much time and effort into their hair," he protested, and shot Jerry a quick smile. "You can still buy me that drink whenever," he said, and followed Bryce inside before Jerry could say anything in response. He probably would've just rolled his eyes anyway- one of the reasons for Iah's endless teasing was the fact that he knew Jerry was pretty okay for a bouncer. "Don't go starting shit, I don't want to lose my job over some fruity motherfucker, okay?" Bryce said, and Iah bit back his need to correct Bryce on his words. It was clear that he didn't mean any harm by it, unlike some other guys, and despite what many people would think, Iah didn't like fighting about stuff like that. It got tiring pretty fast. "Now, that doesn't make sense. How am I supposed to fuck you're mother if I'm gay?" He joked instead, bouncing a little on his feet. The change of temperature was almost shocking, and Iah could already feel his shirt starting to stick to his skin. "But no need to worry about your mom, I swing both ways, so we can make it work," he added, clapping Bryce on his shoulder - which on hindsight was a little ridiculous, because Bryce was a lot taller - and made his way to the bar.

"But no need to worry about your mom, I swing both ways, so we can make it work,” the guy added. “Oh, that’s good to hear, that you fancy gals as well,” Bryce retorted with a grin. “Might get you off of my back for a moment,” he joked, referencing the guys awkward flirting attempts from earlier. He followed Iah to the bar and sat down on a stool. The current bartender, a young woman with short, black hair and equally dark eyes, grinned briefly at him. His co-workers were another reason he genuinely liked the job. There wasn’t a single one he really didn’t get along with. “Good luck badgering someone into getting you a drink, by the way,” he said to Iah. The girl then came over to them. “Hey Deb, one Margarita please,” Bryce said, leaning forward a little to make himself heard over the loud music. “Coming up,” Deb said, and a few seconds later Bryce had his drink and the woman turned to Iah. “Can I help you?” she asked. She was pretty new, so there was a fair chance she wasn’t aware of who the guy was and Bryce looked on with amusement.

"Oh that's good to hear, that you fancy gals as well. Might get you off of my back for a moment," Bryce joked, and Iah rolled his eyes - though he was still grinning wide. "Now don't think too highly of yourself, you're not the only hot guy around here," he said, and immediately after cursed. "I mean- that was a compliment, of course. A friendly one. Just dudes being bros." He scratched the back of his neck and threw Bryce an apologetic grin. He was starting to realise why he always ended up in fights when he'd had something to drink. Iah sat down on the stool next to him and drummed his fingers on the surface of the bar - a mistake, because it was sticky with booze. Gross. He swiped his hands across his thighs and decided to just lean on his elbows. "Good luck badgering someone into getting you a drink, by the way," Bryce told him. "Thanks, you're wishes of good luck mean a lot to me," he said in a grave voice, eyeing the unfamiliar woman standing behind the bar. "Hey Deb, one Margarita please," he heard Bryce say, and it only seemed to take a few seconds before the woman had prepared his drink. "Can I help you?" She asked, turning to Iah. He leaned a little more forwards, making sure he avoided the sticky pools of liquor with his elbows. "So is your name Deb or is it short for something?" He asked. "Debby? Deborah? Deb- no, okay, I guess those are the only two I can come up with," he added. "I mean, ignore me, just a tequila please," he corrected himself, fishing the money out of his pocket.

Just dudes being bros. Bryce had the feeling that, aside from drunk flirting, Iah did not have a whole lot of experience hanging out with guys that weren’t gay. Or at least half-gay, or something. Part of him was a little weirded out by it, part of him was amused. The awkwardness was, in a way, just too funny to really be annoying. He took a sip from his drink and looked on as Iah now made attempts at flirting with Deb, who looked on with a smile that said ‘I’m not sure wether to pity you or not’. The guy then ordered a tequila and actually turned out to have money on him. Bryce grinned. “Look at you, paying for your own shit like an actual adult,” he teased. Not that he was one to complain about someone else’s level of maturity, but they day Bryce gave a shit was yet to come. Deb poured Iah his tequila, but first quickly ran a wipe across the bar, cleaning it for as far as that was possible at this point, and then she put the glass down. Bryce wanted to say something, but was startled by the music suddenly turning off, and the regular lights coming on. He quickly exchanged a quick look with Deb, who looked about as uneasy as he himself felt. “Out of the way!” a man’s voice shouted, and people shuffled to the sides. Three cops had entered the room. On leashes they had large dogs and Bryce had a pretty clear idea of what was going on. “Act neutral,” he mumbled, without directly looking at Iah. “They’re just here looking for drugs." Well, he hoped that was all, at least.

The woman gave him an odd smile, and Iah threw an awkward one back. He had already almost broken his own rule about not flirting with people that were at work. He didn't think it was fair to them, since there were often policies about staying nice towards customers, but it was hard to resist his own instincts. Especially after a few beers. "Look at you, paying for your own shit like an actual adult," Bryce teased as he handed Deb the money for his drink. "I know, it's a real tragedy," Iah sighed. "Actually, that money was meant for groceries this week, but I'll just eat dry cereal for a while," he added with a shrug. He had never been very good with his finances, though he liked to believe that it was just a matter of priorities. Booze just happened to be one of his, as opposed to.. well, basic human needs. He threw Deb a grateful smile when she wiped down the bar before putting down his drink. "I'm probably going to spill booze soon enough, anyway, but thanks," he said, right before all the lights coming on. He blinked and looked at Bryce. "This doesn't happen normally, right?" he whisper-asked, even though he knew the answer himself. He came here often enough, after all. He could hear a man shouting over the white noise of people talking, and Iah could feel his chest constrict as he eyed the three cops entering the club. Without looking away, he grabbed the shot of tequila and gulped it all down in one quick swallow. "Act neutral," Bryce mumbled. "They're just here looking for drugs," he added, and Iah gave a quick nod. Right. Of course. It was probably drugs - this had nothing to do with him. His father would've at least called or texted him if something was up at home. Unless they already got to him, of course. He tried to let out a controlled breath, but it came out more like a quiet gasp. Did puking count as acting normal?

Bryce side-eyed Iah, who suddenly seemed extremely uncomfortable, something that didn't make Bryce feel much better himself. Did the guy have some kind of serious criminal record? Bryce didn't take him for the type, however. "Relax," he said, more empathic now. "They'll be gone before you know it." He wasn't sure of that, of course, as this wasn't something that happened very often. He'd only witnessed it twice and heard a few other stories from co-workers. This was why they often had to check customers for drugs, just to be careful. A cop walked past them, the dog sniffing everything curiously. The two walked on and Bryce managed to keep a relieved sigh in. On the far side of the room, there seemed to be some tumult, and not much later a young man whom Bryce knew to have a bit of a reputation, was forcefully led away. Bryce bit his lower lip, annoyed. Fucking snitches. Another guy and a girl were also led away. The guy went quietly, his face ghostly pale, but the girl was kicking and screaming. Bryce felt bad for them. They had known the risk of course, but was just having fun on a night out really that bad? Sure, he didn't know what they had been using and of course there was the chance that they'd been selling, and not just the innocent stuff either, but still. The second lad could not have been twenty yet.
